Popeye the Sailor series. Cartoon taken to cartoons that are widely accepted by children from different countries. He was the most popular animated character in the United States .

The sailor, who landed on January 17, 1929 , appeared as a minor character in the story “Thimble Theater” designed by EC “Elzie” Segar for the New York newspaper “Evening Journal”. Since then, no one has been able to stop the illustrious spinach eater, Olivia’s suitor, Brutus’s rival and Cocoliso’s protector, who even replaced Mickey Mouse as the most popular animated character in the United States .

The character (meaning bulging eye in English ), with his blue pants, black shirt , white hat and pipe in his mouth , made his first appearance in a comic strip that narrated the adventures of Ham Gravy, his girlfriend Olive Oyl and his brother beaver.

Popeye was born with the phrase “Ja, think I’m a cowboy?” (“Ha, do you think I’m a cowboy?”) to Castor’s question “Are you a sailor?” (“Are you a sailor?”). Popeye, a sailor, vegetarian, and pipe smoker, remained a minor character in the strip until readers asked for more of his adventures.

It was then that the kind-hearted sailor replaced Ham in Olivia’s heart and the creators gave Castor infrequent appearances. The strip was renamed “Thimble Theater, Starring Popeye”.

Max Fleischer thus obtained the rights from Hearst’s King Features Syndicate to turn Popeye into a celluloid star. Production of the first Popeye took place in secret when Roland Crandall , alone and by hand, animated the film aided by the introduction of some recycled Shamus Culhane animation from the first “Betty Boop’s Bamboo Isle” ( 1932 ). The animation was such a success that the two companies reached an agreement for five years.
